If all else fails, start looking for old symlinks. Look under /usr/lib/X11/xkb, or use equery to see where the files of setxkbmap get installed. > Option "XkbRules" "xorg" > Option "XkbModel" "pc105" > Option "XkbLayout" "de" > Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys" Comment all of these out, then try experimenting again with setxkmap.
