I think, that this is bug #61195 - http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61195 The behaviour is caused by the fact, that TERM=gnome and in the screenrc, there's no setting which informs screen, that there's a scroll back buffer in the terminal (or something like this).
