Depends... With GRML and Knoppix, there's a "toram" (or something like that) kernel parameter, which copies the CD (in compressed form) to RAM. Only then, you can remove the CD. But this means, that you need to have at least 1 GB of RAM (800 megs for CD and something to be able to work). IMO that 1 GB of RAM would be better spend somewhere else during compilation time.
