Also, a small addendum/caveat: I *did* install cups with samba USE
enabled. But I did not, during this exercise, use the samba server at
all. Samba was never running. I am not sure whether the samba USE
makes a difference at all, since the article I linked to suggest that
Windows plays well with IPP.  

Insofar as the link from the gentoo forum is concerned: its main
advantage over the one I used is that you don't have to load the
printer driver on every computer in your network (I have only two
windows boxes to deal with).
