Ah, that was the jog my memory needed. For reasons I don't know, there was some old cruft remaining in either /etc/env.d or /etc/conf.d or /etc/java-config-2, or maybe all three, that confused java-config. I had to hand-edit files in one/all of those places before everything started to work again. Pretty sure that was the problem with oo, too.
