If you have a modem that runs in bridge mode rather than in
router/NAT-firewall mode, then make sure you have a firewall
between "you" and the modem.  Something like the above
mentioned WRT54GL works swimmingly (especially if you replace
the factory firmware with something like OpenWRT).

Do not connect your desktop machine directly to a bridge.

It's possible to harden a desktop such that it can be
more-or-less safely connected to a bridge, but if the OP had
that sort of expertise, he wouldn't have asked the question he
asked. ;)
