Ken Caldeira and others have begun to adopt the term "Climate Intervention" as a non-technical term to describe large-scale, direct interventions in the climate system.
http://groups.google.com/group/climateintervention?hl=en This term would encompass solar radiation management and other temperature-stabilization methods, as well as carbon capture approaches (such as ocean fertilization) that interface with ecosystems, but would likely exclude activities such as carbon air capture, that are neutral to ecosystems (though this may be open to lively discussion). The term has the advantage of a being an accurate description of what is being attempted, while being neutral with regard to any implied benefits or specific approaches. It also has the advantages of being fairly intuitive to the lay person, absent of technical jargon and not previously used in a related way in the field (e.g. remediation is already a widely used term to describe greenhouse gas reduction via reducing emissions).
