Biochar policy list (with ccs)
A. I found this hard to read the first time, so here are the six
short statements that Nando broke apart as indicated and rebutted (with
skill) each in depth The numbers were inserted by me.
1. "Here is what the United Nations Environment Program states:
2. Biochar is a new and poorly understood technology
3. and it is likely that its effectiveness as a carbon storing
strategy will depend heavily upon economic and enviornmental
factors. Research is still at a preliminary stage and large-scale
biochar deployment is inadvisable until these uncertainties are
resolved...
4. The creation of biochar plantations should be approached with
great caution.
5. While the use of biochar could be realised in a number of ways
including shifting cultivatoin, charcoal production and the
recycling of agricultural wastes (Lehmann et al 2006) the most
likely large-scale source of bioachar production is the burning of
biofuels...
6. The impacts of large-scale biochar production on biodiversity
and long-term agricultural sustainability (e.g. nutrient depletion)
are unknown"
B. This is to ask Nando and/or Dr. Smolker - what is the citation for
this? I am pretty sure this is not in the several UNEP documents from
2009 that I cited last time - which were very positive about Biochar.
Are these quotes to Dr. Smolker's recollection of what was said or if
direct UNEP quotes - from where? (Like Nando - I'd like to learn more
about the authors.)
C. This was all supposed to relate to the Asilomar conference on
Geoengineering (but doesn't). Next I report on what I learned Monday
from 4 people who attended. None knew anything about Biochar - but they
assured me that Biochar was a big topic. If anyone reading this knows
anyone who attended (and especially the one Breakout session (one of
five) where Biochar was a dominant topic), I hope they will encourage
them to join in - and/or write me.
