1. I am glad to hear that you don't know the source. I am
suspecting that these are not direct quotes from any UNEP document, but
are Dr. Smolke's paraphrasing of something from some years back. To me
the important point is that they do not reflect UNEP's current view - if
they ever did.
2. I know that you were reacting to Dr. Smolker's article/ PR
release that appeared in "Common Dreams" - but her point in that piece
was to deplore the occurrence of the conference as well as all the
technologies (and her piece included Biochar in the small but inaccurate
way to which we have been reacting). My point in this dialog is Iknow
different from yours - it has been to try to figure out what the impact
of the Asilomar conference will be on the growth of Biochar.
3. As the main point of the final conference statement was to
encourage R&D but not wide spread application, I guess Biochar was not
hurt very much. One could interpret this to mean more funding for
Biochar R&D. But if the interpretation is to discourage carbon credits
for Biochar, I think the statement could be very harmful.
4. Biochar is unique amongst all the geoengineering technologies
being discussed (save for tree-planting which I see as integral to large
scale Biochar use) in terms of hundreds - maybe thousands of experiments
going on in the private sector. I don't see anything in the final
conference statement to halt this private sector enthusiasm, but someone
(like BFW or the ETC group) might. This is the reason for my
emphasizing the Asilomar part of Dr. Smolker's "common dreams" paper.
5. I also find it amazing that BFW is so much against the REDD
concept - and hope we can hear more from anyone on that - as REDD seems
to me can/will be important in removing CO2, but will need Biochar to
keep it out. I believe the main reason for BFW reacting so negatively
against REDD is their rejection of anything that looks corporate. They
don't appreciate how much Biochar can help poor and struggling farmers
around the world (and help biodiversity at the same time). BFW just has
their blinders on. They have actually been encouraging slash and burn!!!
