alternative hose elevation technology, originally intended for
space-launch.

The idea is to suspend a tube at great height (in this case a launch
track for a space vehicle) using magnetic repulsion and tension
cables.  Metaphorically put, this creates a reverse-gravity field
which allows the tube to 'hang up' as opposed to hanging down.

This is a very interesting concept, and has apparently been properly
costed against balloon-suspension (see linked article for references).

If this analysis has in fact been done rigorously, it's potentially
game-changing.  The SPICE project shows how seriously balloon lift is
being taken, and this technology is allegedly superior.

I'd be really interested to hear comments.
