The temperature, sea level and climate have not changed much since the 8.2ky flooding event. However we would not be here as a civilisation to look back on the past, if there had not been such stability. Our honeymoon period is now over, and we can expect the Earth System to resume its unstable behaviour, with rapid responses to changes in forcing and some nasty surprises. In particular, the Arctic sea ice is past its tipping point and the Arctic Ocean is accelerating towards a low-ice state which could be reached within a few years. The ending of the honeymoon means that increasingly mankind is going to have to intervene to restore the Earth System to the state that it was in during the rise of civilisation - the state to which we have grown accustomed, and to which our institutions are geared, as the paper points out. Unfortunately adaptation is likely to be impossible, because climate change will be too severe as the Arctic Ocean reaches a low-ice state and rapid warming continues due to huge albedo loss. The temperature gradient from tropics to Arctic will be reducing dramatically, further destabilising the Northern Hemisphere climate system (currently based on three bands of Hadley cells with jet streams between them). Thus, rather than institutions changing, the institutions need to realise what is happening and support the interventions necessary to put our Earth System back into a state which is at least tolerable for continued human existence on this planet. There is no way that "nature" will do this for us. We have to intervene at least to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and refreeze the Arctic if we are to have a healthy planet for the future. Refreezing the Arctic has now become extremely urgent, because we could be passing the point of no return very soon - even perhaps this coming September if we allow the sea ice to collapse. And we can't live with the Arctic in a low sea-ice state - fossil fuel companies please note.
