*Climate
Intervention Reports: Release Event February 10* The National Research
Council invites you to the public release of two reports, *Climate
Intervention: Carbon Dioxide Removal and Reliable Sequestration*, and *Climate
Intervention: Reflecting Sunlight to Cool Earth* on *Tuesday, February 10,
2015 at 11:00 a.m. EST*. These reports provide a scientific foundation to
help inform the ethical, legal, and political discussions surrounding
climate intervention (also known as geoengineering)--the purposeful
intervention in the climate system to counter climate change. The reports
assess the potential impacts, benefits, and costs of two different proposed
classes of climate intervention: (1) carbon dioxide removal and (2) albedo
modification (reflecting sunlight). The reports also discuss governance
issues and the research needed to provide a credible scientific
underpinning for future discussions. Register here to attend the event

The release event will feature:

   - Opening remarks by Ralph Cicerone, President of the National Academy
   of Sciences and Chair of the National Research Council;
   - A presentation by Marcia McNutt, Editor-in-Chief, *Science*, and Chair
   of the report's authoring committee;
   - A Q&A session with Dr. McNutt and committee members David Titley of
Pennsylvania State University; Scott Doney of Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution; and Waleed Abdalati of the Cooperative Institute for Research
in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)-University of Colorado.

Developed with input from the ocean sciences community, a new report from
the National Research Council identifies eight priority areas for ocean
science research in the next decade, including the rate and impacts of
sea-level rise, the effects of climate change on marine ecosystems, and a
greater understanding of marine food webs. *Sea Change: 2015-2025 Decadal
Survey of the Ocean Sciences*

also assesses the infrastructure needed to support this research, and makes
recommendations for rebalancing budgets to reach research goals.
Join a free webinar on *Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at 3:00 p.m. EST *to
learn about the report from co-chairs Shirley Pomponi of Harbor Branch
Oceanographic Institution-Florida Atlantic University and David Titley of
the Pennsylvania State University. In addition, the report's authoring
committee will be presenting a series of seminars at research institutions
around the country over the next few weeks. To register for the webinar and

Don't miss the opportunity to join colleagues and science lovers to learn
about cutting edge ocean topics at the Ocean Studies Board's 16th Annual
Roger Revelle Commemorative on *Wednesday, March 4,* *2015 at 5:30* *p.m.*
at the Baird Auditorium of the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History.
This year, Dr. Susan Lozier of Duke University will present: *Overturning
Assumptions: Past, present, and future concerns about the ocean's
circulation. * Lozier will share research that is uncovering the mechanisms
that control the overturning strength of ocean circulation and how it may
change in the decades ahead. As the pieces are coming together, some
long-held assumptions have been overturned and some new paradigms are
surfacing. The lecture will be immediately followed by a reception. The
event is free and open to the public. Please RSVP here.

*What Ethical Issues do Climate Scientists and Engineers Face?*

The NAE's Online Ethics Center (OEC) is putting out a call for examples
and/or case studies of ethical issues that climate scientists and engineers
have or are facing, as well as such cases involving societal decision
making. The case studies will be used as part of OECs' effort to upgrade
and expand its online resources and support for ethics education in both
science and engineering. If you have cases to suggest, please email
[email protected].
