Stratospheric Aerosols

Olivier Boucher

Abstract

This chapter discusses the specificities of aerosol processes and aerosol
properties in the stratosphere. This includes background material on
stratospheric circulation, a discussion of the sulphur budget in the
stratosphere, and a description of aerosol size distribution in volcanic
and nonvolcanic (background) conditions. The chapter further provides a
description of past major volcanic eruptions and their impact on the
climate system.
