Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the workshop organizing committee, I am happy to announce the
inaugural PAGES Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS) workshop,
which will be held at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia
University in Palisades, NY on June 6-8, 2016.

The workshop will aim to:

   1. Summarize the state of knowledge concerning global radiative forcing
from volcanic eruptions, including forcing reconstructions used in climate
models. Identify where recent progress has occurred, and where the largest
   uncertainties remain.
   2. Assess the state of consistency between climate responses to volcanic
forcing derived from direct observations, inferred from proxy data and
   simulated by climate models.
   3. Gather and synthesize recommendations concerning opportunities and
best practices for integrating historical documentary evidence of volcanic
climate impacts with estimates from paleoclimate data and climate models.
Review progress and challenges in understanding historical societal impacts
   of volcanic eruptions.
   4. Identify and define future goals for the VICS working group, based on
the needs of the scientific community and potential stakeholders.

These workshop aims require interdisciplinary solutions, drawing on
expertise from a variety of backgrounds, including (but not limited to) the
fields of stratospheric aerosol measurements, radiative transfer theory,
aerosol microphysical modeling, ice core science, geology, volcanology,
high-resolution paleoclimate reconstructions, climate modeling and history.

Confirmed speakers include:

   - Stefan Brönniman (University of Bern, Switzerland)
   - Andrea Burke (University of St. Andrews, UK)
   - Chaochao Gao (Zhejiang University, China)
   - Britta Jensen (University of Alberta, Canada)
   - Joe Manning (Yale University, USA)
   - Michael Rampino (New York University, USA)
   - Alan Robock (Rutgers University, USA)
   - Brian Toon (University of Colorado at Boulder, USA)
   - Davide Zanchettin (University of Venice, Italy)

Those interested in participating are asked to submit an abstract to
https://conferences.geomar.de/event/VICS2016 between March 18 and April 1.
Based on the level of interest, participants will be assigned an oral
presentation or poster presentation. Thanks to the support of PAGES and the
LDEO/NASA GISS Climate Center, limited travel support will be available for
young scientists or researchers from underrepresented regions.

Looking forward to a stimulating workshop, and hope to see you there!

Matt
