"Carbon removal refers to any process or system capable of removing and
sequestering carbon from the air overits life cycle."
GR - How might preventing CO2 from escaping from a natural/non-fossil source
fit in?Example 1 Rather than being returned to the soil and remineralized to
CO2, crop waste is buried underground or in the deep ocean.Example 2 Crop
waste is converted to biochar and stored away from soil.Example 3 Alkalinity
or base minerals are added to upwelling ocean regions such that the CO2
normally ventilating to air is consumed.Example 4 Ditto for soils.
Base/alkalinity is added to consume the respiration CO2 that would otherwise
vent to the atmosphere.
In all cases there is no additional removal and sequestration of carbon from
air, only enhanced sequestration of carbon otherwise venting from
natural/non-fossil sources. This reduces air CO2 by reducing air CO2 emissions
rather than increasing air CO2 removal. Carbon is removed from the system, but
not directly from air. Is this CDR or no?
How about this definition: "Carbon removal refers to any process or system
that in net removes and sequesters carbon from air or from a natural/non-fossil
source that otherwise emits to air. " ?

Poster's note : pastes badly, but this Berkeley CDR infographic factsheet is
pretty cool Carbon removal refers to any process or system capable of removing
and sequestering carbon from the air over
its life cycle. Carbon removal systems enable us to clean up emissions that
have accumulated in the
atmosphere. Climate experts are increasingly convinced that carbon removal
solutions are an im-
portant complement to swift greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions, yet most
removal solu-
tions face many obstacles to reach scale. This fact sheet builds the case for
the swift development
of carbon removal solutions.Ecosystems Agriculture Energy Mining/Manufacturing

The Center for Carbon Removal
is a non-profit initiative of the
Berkeley Energy & Climate
Institute. We are dedicated
to curtailing climate change
by igniting action to develop
and implement strategies for
removing carbon dioxide from
the atmosphere by:
Conducting research and
analysis to highlight opportu-
nities and to address challenges
surrounding carbon removal.
Hosting events that engage
public, private, and civil sector
organizations to accelerate the
development of carbon removal
Curating a comprehensive online
hub for high-quality information
and discussion about carbon
removal.
