>From 1905-1907, a cut in a canal made by the California Development Company
changed the course of the Colorado River, creating an accidental sea in an
ancient lakebed: the Salton Sea. During the 1950s, entrepreneurs had
momentary success in making this “mistake” into opportunity, but the sea
went into decline in the 1970s and 1980s. At present, the sea faces several
ecological challenges, and is on a trajectory for a rapid drying. This
