But perhaps not as "barking mad" and "profoundly disturbing" as the concept
that voluntary or cohersed reduction of anthropogenic emissions alone will now
save the day, especially if <2degC warming is the goal (IPCC, 2013-14). Rather
than making blanket, derogatory statements about "under-conceptualized"
alternative technologies, how about we make a concerted effort to conceptualize
and objectively evaluate all of our options in the now likely event that some
of them might prove useful if not essential? Or is that too "anthropocentric",
and "interventionist", and if so what is the better plan?

Abstract
This presentation traces historical pathways leading to the contemporary grand
challenge of climate change. It offers a critique of “barking mad”technological
fixes that seek to intervene in and control climate and unpacks the limitations
of an “interventionist” Anthropocene – the proposed, but sorely
under-conceptualized new era that, in its reductionism, determinism and bald
anthropocentrism, is profoundly disturbing.
