Chapter 7: Whole earth security: an engineered world

Simon Dalby

*Abstract*
Technological modes of intervention as a response to these threats
frequently leads to discussions of geoengineering and attempts to use force
to reshape at least parts of the planetary system. In contrast, whole earth
security understands the interconnections between ecologies and human
habitats as the essential framework for living appropriately within the
vulnerable context of a fragile planet. An alternative focus on ecology and
the flourishing of ecosystems, as in regenerative agriculture and
permaculture modes of food production, suggests possibilities for living
within nature, inhabiting the world rather than exploiting it, a matter of
taking eco-security, in Chinese terms, seriously.
