Tom,
Thanks for the quick reply. I am aware of the intense effort you and your
team put into the release of SP3. There is no question that Geosoft should
be given an A+ for the customer focus they have demonstrated.
That being said, some of the problems being reported by different users who
upgraded to SP3 seem somewhat serious. (i.e. the possibility of having to
regrid and/or reproject grids for an ongoing project after adding SP3 could
be somewhat time consuming). You have indicated that Geosoft has not been
able to duplicate these problems. I take it then that a significant number
of users who have upgraded have Not reported any problems.
Thanks again,
Dave

Subject: RE: [geonet]: Service Pack 3
Dave,
We issued the "all-clear" to install SP3 the day we released the notice to
everyone via the Tech Connection on May 30, 2000. This is the result of an
intensive period of internal testing, which includes extensive unit tests
and a full suite of manual tests. All tests must pass for us to release.
We are confident that SP3 is much better that SP2, and we know that at least
130 issues in SP2 have been addressed in SP3.
That being said, despite our extensive effort, there will always be issues
that we have not been able to find, such as the difficulty reported by
Orion. In this case, we consider this an isolated difficulty for which we
have received only one other possibly related report. We have not been able
to duplicate this problem ourselves. We will continue to investigate this
until we can duplicate the problem and determine a better workaround than we
came up with for Orion. If anyone has experienced a problem with units (the
symptom is moved items on a map), please send me an e-map of the map in
question.
We want all our users to be confident of the level of diligence and effort
we are applying to make OASIS the best it can be in meeting your needs. I
encourage everyone to install SP3.
Tom

Tom,
When and If, will Geosoft issure the "all clear" to update to the new
service pack. Based upon previous testimony, it would appear that the risks
are not worth it. Can you clarify?
Thanks,
Dave Meaux

Subject: [geonet]: Service Pack 3
GEONET,
This is a follow up on the problems experienced by Orion Fairman when he
upgraded to Service Pack 3, after which he found the units on his grid files
and map files had been altered.
The Testing group has been running tests on several operating systems,
upgrading from SP2. We have created workspaces, maps, and grids with US
feet, meters, projected and non projected data and have been unable to
duplicate the problem. In Orion's case, we found that deleting the .gi
files associated with the grids corrected his difficulties, although others
should note that this will cause your grids to loose their projection
information.
At this time, we believe this problem is isolated to Orion's occurrence.
However, we would very much like to know if anyone else has experienced a
similar problem. Please contact me immediately either via email at
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] or by phone at 416-369-0111.
