I have been having problems trying to import grids into ArcView even though
I have both 3D Analyst and Spatial Analyst extensions. I produced FLT
binary grids in Oasis but kept getting an error described by ArcView as a
syntax error. I then tried an ASCII form of the grid and was able to
sucessfully read it into ArcView. The plot thickens when I tried to read a
similar ASCII grid using the same version of ArcView on a laptop at home.
At that point I got really frustrated and began to consider whether
something wierd might not be going on. I began to load other extensions
into memory on the off chance that it might somehow help. To my surprise
and chagrin it does help. Unfortunately, I still do not have any rational
for exactly which extensions should be loaded. I found that in order to
read the ASCII grids, I had to have the "geoprocessing" extension loaded in
addition to 3D Analyst and Spatial Analyst (I do not know if I really need
both of them). In order to read the binary grid from Oasis, I had to load
an extension related to images. The only clue that I had is that other
people apparently had no trouble reading the grids. The mystery to me is
why 3D analyst or Spatial Analyst would not be sufficient by themselves.
This whole process has been extremely frustrating and I pass on this
experience in the hopes that others may benefit from it and that those at
Geosoft will add this knowledge to their data bank. Perhaps someone at
Geosoft could investigate the whole issue and consider putting something
into the help files to warn people about this. Yes, I know that none of
this is a direct issue for Geosoft except for the fact that Oasis provides
the export option.

Now, can anyone tell me how to get shape files produced that can be read by
Arcview? I have written shape files from Oasis and ArcView seems to read
them but they are apparently empty. Is there some secret combination of
extensions that have to be loaded? Or is there some secret procedure to be
followed in the generation of the shape files in Oasis?
