I have been struggling to understand how to use groups on a map with very
little success. According to the help file, I can create an empty group
and then populate it with various graphics objects. Well, I can indeed
create a new group but I have yet to be able to get anything to become a
subset of that group. My goal is to have both text and lines as part of
the same group so that I can turn them on and off together. The lines come
from a database and are plotted using the PATH GX. Any such lines ALWAYS
seem to end up in a separate group named PATH_whatever. The text is even
more confusing. My preferred approach (because I understand it to some
extent) is to use a map control file. I access the map control file via
the Mapping/Base Map/MAPPLOT control file and this always results in a
group under the BASE view (e.g Quads, defined by using the MGRP command)
and something called Quadsbase plus something called Quadsdata under the
DATA view. Hiding either the Quads or Quadsbase groups does absolutely
nothing (except to redraw the map). Hiding the Quadsdata does hide the
text. I can guess that I probably should not be using the Base Map
approach but I have not been able to find anything to tell me how to go
about it any other way.

My questions are:
1. Is it even possible to do what I am trying to do with Oasis (i.e. group
the lines as plotted by PATH and the text plotted as described above)? If
so, how?

2. How does one actually populate an empty group with graphics objects and
which objects (i.e. which GX's) can be used to accomplish this? More
importantly, what are the steps one must follow?

I sometimes get the feeling that I am playing a game and the game manager
will not tell me the rules but will dangle the possibility of being able to
do something in front of me.
