Dear Joe,
I can sense your frustration and hope that I can help to ease it.
Firstly, I would recommend not using a mapplot control file unless you
really need to. Once you get the hang of editing map groups, I'm sure you'll
find it much easier than using a control file.
Secondly, you can indeed do what you want to do.
When you create a line path (by selecting Mapping/Line Path in montaj) it
will always create a new group in the Data view of your map called
PATH_database name. You can then add text to this group by:
1. Selecting the PATH_ group on your map.
To select a group, you need to enable the "Select A Group" button on your
Map Toolbar (third button from the top on the right-hand side of your
screen). Then left-mouse click on top of your map. Now right-mouse click on
top of your line path and select Groups/View/Group Manager from the pop-up
menu. This will take you into the Map View/Group Manager which lists every
group (or "layer") on your map and the respective map view that it is in
(Base or Data).
Now highlight the PATH_ group by left-mouse clicking on the name. Then
select OK.
In the lower left-hand corner of your screen you should see the words: Group
PATH_database name. This means that you have selected the PATH_ group.
Always check here to ensure that you've chosen the correct group on your
map.
2. Edit the PATH_ group.
To get into edit mode, right-mouse click on top of the line path on your map
again. Choose "Edit This Group" from the pop-up menu that appears. You will
see another vertical toolbar appear beside your Map Toolbar on the
right-hand side of your screen.
3. Add text to your PATH_ group.
With the editing toolbar, you can now select the "Type a Text Item" button
which has a letter "A" on it. This will allow you to position your cursor
where you would like the text to start. Left-mouse click on the start
position and then you can type in the text that you desire.
You can then change the text size, colour, etc. by right-mouse clicking on
top of the text item that you've just typed and selecting "Attributes" from
the pop-up menu or by resizing the text box.
Similarly, when you create a new group on your map, you need to select that
group, go into edit mode to access the editing tools and then you can add
text, polygons, lines, etc..
Once in edit mode, you can right-mouse click and choose "Select All" to
select all items in the group (e.g. lines and text) and then right-mouse
click again to access the Line/Text/Symbol Attributes that you wish to
change.
I hope that this helps. If not, please give our Tech Support department a
call as they would be happy to walk through this with you.
Kindest regards,
Lorraine Godwin

Subject: [geonet]: Groups and how to use them
I have been struggling to understand how to use groups on a map with very
little success. According to the help file, I can create an empty group
and then populate it with various graphics objects. Well, I can indeed
create a new group but I have yet to be able to get anything to become a
subset of that group. My goal is to have both text and lines as part of
the same group so that I can turn them on and off together. The lines come
from a database and are plotted using the PATH GX. Any such lines ALWAYS
seem to end up in a separate group named PATH_whatever. The text is even
more confusing. My preferred approach (because I understand it to some
extent) is to use a map control file. I access the map control file via
the Mapping/Base Map/MAPPLOT control file and this always results in a
group under the BASE view (e.g Quads, defined by using the MGRP command)
and something called Quadsbase plus something called Quadsdata under the
DATA view. Hiding either the Quads or Quadsbase groups does absolutely
nothing (except to redraw the map). Hiding the Quadsdata does hide the
text. I can guess that I probably should not be using the Base Map
approach but I have not been able to find anything to tell me how to go
about it any other way.
My questions are:
1. Is it even possible to do what I am trying to do with Oasis (i.e. group
the lines as plotted by PATH and the text plotted as described above)? If
so, how?
2. How does one actually populate an empty group with graphics objects and
which objects (i.e. which GX's) can be used to accomplish this? More
importantly, what are the steps one must follow?
I sometimes get the feeling that I am playing a game and the game manager
will not tell me the rules but will dangle the possibility of being able to
do something in front of me.
