Thanks for this.  It has always puzzled us at Geosoft why our own GTOPO30
reader works on some *.dem files but not others.  The answer is that "TAR
File Smart CR/LF Conversion" needs to be turned off when extracting the file
using WINZIP.  The files can then be directly read using the Geosoift
GTOPO30 format.

To everyone who provided help with the GTOPO 30 problem, thank you.
Importing the data with an ERMapper header worked the best and then
converting it to a Geosoft grid solved the problem.

The USGS also advised that if you unzip the data using WinZip, you need
to go to Options and the Configuration tab, and turn the "TAR File Smart
CR/LF Conversion " option to off.
