Hi,
Am not sure about the AMI but the standard geonode debian package install
places the local_settings file at /etc/geonode/local_settings.py.
A symbolic link of the same is also at
/var/lib/geonode/src/GeoNodePy/geonode/local_settings.py
One can also create a super user from within geonode's virtual environment
using the command  django-admin.py createsuperuser.
I hope that helps.

Regards,
Allan Oware.
