GetFeatureInfo on Layer Preview Fails Unless Workspace is Cite

Only on layers we have uploaded ourselves, GetFeatureInfo request when clicking
on a feature yields the following, instead of a table.
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Can't find neither a FeatureType nor a
CoverageInfo named http://www.opengeospatial.net/cite:trees Can't find neither
a FeatureType nor a CoverageInfo named http://www.opengeospatial.net/cite:trees
Note that this layer in question was not in the cite workspace. When places in
cite workspace, GetFeatureInfo request works fine.
