I'll see if I can come up with something; we're looking at updating a layer daily and being able to retrieve timestamped tiles from a BigTable-like datastore. I don't really know about typical use cases, but I wouldn't be surprised if a user wanted to scroll through, say, a month's worth of updates at various zoom levels. It all depends on what you mean by "very few".
