The search box definitely used to work for the pre-2.4.0 documents.
Something appears to have happened to make them disappear from the results
with that release though.
I can set up a custom search easily enough - (include site:
http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/ and it'll only get the GeoServer
docs). But many users will use the GeoServer Search because it's there. A
false negative is worse than no search function because it implies to the
user that there is no documentation on something. I'm guessing you or
someone has the stats for server-search use so you'd be able to see how
much it's being used.
