That said, since this is a request I made to Nicola myself, I can be more prolix. I want to make sure in the short term that we are able to switch back and forth between JAI and JAI-Ext in case we see bugs or performance drops. Despite the fact that we have been testing things carefully this might happen, hence I want to make sure we are able to wuicklt go back to the status quo. In the long run I am hoping to replace JAI entirely, but there is still work to do since that would mean replacing the basic infrastructure, and some bits are yet to be rewritten (e.g. the tile scheduler).
