Isn’t it so that start.jar starts Jetty by reading configuration from
start.ini? And what startup.bat and .sh do is to set some parameters for the
final launching line which is for mac:
exec "$_RUNJAVA" $JAVA_OPTS $MARLIN_ENABLER
-DGEOSERVER_DATA_DIR="$GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR" -Djava.awt.headless=true
-DSTOP.PORT=8079 -DSTOP.KEY=geoserver -jar start.jar
I think it is possible to start Geoserver with start.jar but then the correct
environment should have been set in some other way.

Jody, you're often so literal.... Let me rephrase using all the words needed:
"I never heard that one could just start *GeoServer double clicking on*
"start.jar", is it something Mac specific"ù
You were complaining that GeoServer would not start using start.jar, I thought
the context was obvious...
