I think a bare, minimum “official” image would be a good start for many people.
Customers can always use the official version as a base FROM image when
building a derived image for their own use.

Subject: Re: [Geoserver-devel] Official Docker image?

Hi Simone, thanks for your reply.

I understand your points and they make sense, yet I still _feel_ like it'd be
good to have a bare minimum "official" image. By one side we could instruct to
try out geoserver by just pulling geoserver/<version> image, and by the other
it would make it easier to justify a choice of docker image when working on a
related project like it's my case now. Of course, I could build my own, but I
think there could be a lot of other people in the same situation. My current
one being I'm using the docker-maven-plugin to run integration tests against a
live instance and customer would be happier if I used some sort of official
image.

I agree none would fit all cases. I reckon I'm rather new to this arena and
amazed by the possibilities and options it brings out, and thought having a
simple barebones per release tagged image submitted to docker hub would be a
good idea.

Let's leave the idea floating around and see what happens.

Cheers,
Gabe.

Dear Gabriel,
this is an interesting topic, which we discussed a few times here at
GeoSolutions.

There are a few good docker images around side from this one from oscar; we
have our own, there is one from Kartoza, there is one from Thinkwhere, etc..
All of them or good but each one of them has something good and something bad,
infact we ended up doing our own; this does not mean that are own is the best
but that our own is the one we like.
Someone else might jump in and say he does not like because of this and/or
because of that...

Long story short, I would not select an "official" docker image but we might
want to reference the good ones we have around.
Then it is up to the users to decide which is the best one for them, according
to their needs and experience.

Happy to hear other opinions.

Simone Giannecchini

Hello everyone,

I wonder if there's something close to an official geoserver docker image?

If not, these ones look promising as a starting point
<https://hub.docker.com/r/oscarfonts/geoserver> and makes me wonder if Oscar
Fonts would be willing to step up as the maintainer. Oscar is a great guy so
I'm thinking he will.

In any case, what do you guys think? Worth having official docker images? are
there any already?
