I think a bare, minimum “official” image would be a good start for many people. Customers can always use the official version as a base FROM image when building a derived image for their own use.

By one side we could instruct to try out geoserver by just pulling geoserver/<version> image, and by the other it would make it easier to justify a choice of docker image when working on a related project like it's my case now. Of course, I could build my own, but I think there could be a lot of other people in the same situation. My current one being I'm using the docker-maven-plugin to run integration tests against a live instance and customer would be happier if I used some sort of official image. I agree none would fit all cases. I reckon I'm rather new to this arena and amazed by the possibilities and options it brings out, and thought having a simple barebones per release tagged image submitted to docker hub would be a good idea.
