I installed a "minimal virtual machine" using the ubuntu 10.4 server 
installation image and followed my steps. It worked!

I have to admit: i had to install wget to download geoserver, everything else 
worked. I can display the default layer previews.

i'm setting a "full" server installation right now and will report back in a 
few minutes.
