It looks like it has changed, indeed.

I was able to set up GS based on my 4-Step guide (including installing 
tomcat6). Now i have tomcat6 running with default settings and openjdk. I'm 
able to view the layers installed by default via layer preview. I also executed 
some of the demo requests (selected randomly).
