It seems the wrong type of geometry is sent to GeoServer and then into the
db. I would suspect a difference between polygon and multipolygon, or vice
versa.

You can activate the request logging filter in the web.xml and have the
actual request qgis is sending be logged into geoserver.log (or just see it
in the log viewer page in the administration GUI if you are using a recent
enough version of GeoServer)
