Thanks Justin. That's spot on.
There is a slight further problem - you can't log in to change the proxy
setting (from outside the proxy) without having the proxy setting set!
Any idea which version last worked, and I will use an old one for the
time being?

However, you can also set it from the "Global Settings" page in the web
ui. Look for proxy base url. When setting this geoserver will use this
as the base url for any self referencing urls.
