Tough to say. Not for quite some time I think. You could try a 1.7.x but
that is quite an old release now and no longer supported.
You could manually make the change in the data directory without logging in
through the interface before your deploy geoserver. It is a simple change to
global.xml, just add <proxyBaseUrl>http://<proxyHost>/geoserver</proxyBaseUrl>
before the closing </global> element.
