Hi Milo,

Yes, removing GWC jars is what I do as well to disable GWC (has to do 
with SpringBeans sprouting from GWC .jars). I remove the following from 
WEB-INF/lib:

geowebcache*.jar
gwc*.jar
web-gwc*.jar
