You can change this with the command-line option -XX:PermSize=256m (for
256MB). Java loads class code and other things into memory in permgen.
If you have a lot of classes you may run out of memory there. 

You can set it to a large value and then run 'jconsole' to connect to
the java process and look what is actually used after some usage.
