Thank to all for your responses. The application I'm using requires the .shp file to be stored on a web server. An extract from its help page is below ... I hope this can explain it clearer. I thought that Geoserver might be the solution, but I might be wrong ...
To visualize one or multiple shapefiles into your dashboard, you will first upload your shapefiles onto any web/application server and then define the URL (HTTP://yourfile.shp). Shapefiles can be loaded onto your local PC (FILE://yourfile.shp) for testing, though it is recommended to load the files onto your web/application server behind your corporate firewall. Note: When binding a .SHP file path to a web server: Not all web servers will support .SHP as a file type. The .SHP extension can be modified to ".TXT" by simply modifying the file extension. The web server will require a crossdomain.xml file to successfully access and load the .SHP (or .TXT) file. A crossdomain.xml file should be placed into the ROOT directory of your web/application server. -----Original Message----- From: Ben Caradoc-Davies [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, 28 February 2011 5:11 PM To: Simon Emmanuel Cc: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Geoserver-users] URL of shapefile Simon, if your application reads shapefiles directly via HTTP, and does not need them converted to GML (via WfS) or an image (via WMS), then you can deliver them with any web server (apache web server, tomcat, IIS, ...). You do not need GeoServer if you just want to access the raw shapefiles. Kind regards, Ben.
