Unfortunately I can't give you the images due to licensing issues of the data. 
I hope that you have an idea due to the outcome of gdalinfo.

When I compare my set up of the data with the one from nurc:mosaic, which is in 
the demo data of Geoserver, I can't see any differences. In that example the 
connection parameters of the store is pointing to the Index-Shape. This would 
relate to my former option2, but as I said, also this way led to black images 
only. 

Another list member, Imrad, gave the advice to look at the Mosaic Plugin 
properties file. Actually, I have no clue where to look for that one nor would 
I know what to configure in there.

Option 3 should be working... are your raster data georeferenced?
What is the output of gdalinfo on one of the files?
It would help to be able to get our hands on that data and try it out locally, 
can you share just those four files?
