Sorry I do not agree with that, within a MXD file you can find
additional geo referenced objects, called Elements. These kind of
elements could be markers and images (for more information have a look
at the ESRI ArcObjects API [1]). Also these additional objects can be
userdefined, means, every mxd file contains different objects.
Properbly you need additional programming tasks to get these objects
converted and transformed into a standard datastore.
But if you like to extract styles you should check out the arcmap2sld
project [2]
