I am not sure to have understood your question: layers are not fully loaded in 
memory (well, it depends on the particular DataStore, but...), hence there is 
no 
memory limitation for just one of them (you can have raster layers of some 
gigabytes); what gets loaded into the heap is the "catalog", which is a very 
limited set of information about each layer.
