If you like, you can install the management application
tomcat6-admin-webapps

You have to add

    <role  rolename="manager-gui"/>
     <role  rolename="manager-script"/>
     <role  rolename="manager-jmx"/>
     <role  rolename="manager"/>
     <user name="admin" password="password" roles="manager,manager-gui" />
to
/etc/tomcat6/tomcat-users.xml for creating an administrator.

> "-Xmx1024m
Enable a maximum java heap size of 1024 MB = 1 GB. You can adjust the value.
Too less heap size may cause heap dumps. Perhaps this was the reason for your
tomcat crashes.

> -Djava.awt.headless=true
Allow the usage of java display functions even if no display (screen)
is attached. This may also
have caused your crashes.

> -Djava.util.prefs.userRoot=/usr/share/tomcat6/userprefs
> -Djava.util.prefs.systemRoot=/usr/share/tomcat6/systemprefs"

Java writes hidden preference files. Normally, you must not bother
about this. But for SLES 11, the home directory of tomcat
/usr/share/tomcat6/ is owned by root:root and any attempt of the java
virtual machine to write the preferences results in an access denied.
Changing ownership to tomcat:tomcat should be enough, you can omit
these two properties.

Hope this helps
Christian
