This kind of error normally happens if the wms client inside GeoServer
failed to connect to the remote server while issuing the GetMap.
This might happen, for example, if the remote server capabilities
point to a GetMap
url that is not valid.
If you enable "geotools developer" logging level you should see, among a lot of
other things something like:

Issuing request: http://demo.geo-solutions.it/wms?...

Which I guess is followed shortly by the above error (in extended form, with
the full stack trace).
