This may not help. It will also not zoom deeper than one scale level
above the actual pixel scale of the image. Are you certain that actual
pixel scale is finer than the pixel resolution of 1:173M? Its easy to
calculate.
I am using tms and gdal2tiles because I am viewing the image off usb
stick without a server which is clearly not your application.
