I may not able to answer your further questions., but we have done it in an
application and one of our colleagues used iText for generating *map with
reports* in pdf format in an application.

Initially used geoext library, but there was some limitation in parameter
parsing through GET method. with itext library, he was send more parameters
with POST method.
