I changed the url adding the version, which is a good improvement since
geoserver now reads properly demis native srs and extend
I added the raster layer "topography" to play with
but still can't get it to superpose with the original source in Qgis
I've double checked extends, not quite sure what I could do wrong

GeoServer 2.1.1 won't play well with a WMS 1.3 server.
