Ciao Steven,
I experimented personally with the mbtiles format a couple of months
ago since I wanted to check how difficult if would be to use the
format.
At the moment implementing support for it is still on my wish list but
from my experiments it would be relatively easy to implement it.

Long story short, we do not have a clear/definitive plan for
implementing support for MBTiles, if you feel like putting it together
and donating it, I believe
you could find community support on the list. If you are looking for
commercial support check this page
