I've installed 11.10 64-bit without a hiccup. I typically screw something up if I go by memory, so I follow the GeoWebCache instructions (http://geowebcache.org/docs/current/installation/prerequisites/linux.html) to get Java and Tomcat running and then just add GeoServer and JAI manually.
