This seems like a good candidate for a WPS process.  There's nothing that
will do this right now as far as I'm aware, but it should be fairly easy to
develop.

To make it really easy to use it would be nice to be able to call it using
GET, rather than POST. Unfortunately AFAIK GeoServer doesn't support
calling WPS via GET right now.
