Martin I really appreciate your suggestion on PointStacker. Unfortunately I can't try it until Monday now. The page didn't specify if you could aggregate conditionally (e.g. group by) which would be really useful, because then features could retain the right symbology. It seems like it was designed for symbolising counts more than anything. However it will definitely help me narrow down the problem.
